Chitins & Chitosans

Chitin is one of most abundant glycans. It is a linear, water insoluble (1®4)-linked 2-acetamido-2-deoxy b-D-glucan derived from crustaceans and other sources. Chitosan, the N-deacetylated homologue, constitutes one of the few natural amino-glucans. Both glucans have attracted much interest in recent years in view of a number of interesting biological properties (1-3). Chitosan gels can be used for cell immobilization (4). We offer chitin and chitosan products from a variety of natural sources, including crab, lobster, shrimp, squid in different molecular weight ranges and grades, ranging from 10-10,000 mPas (1% solutions in aqueous acetic acid, 25°C) and flocculant and technical to high purity grades in powder or flake forms. The degrees of chitosan acetylation ranges from 75-90%. Unless otherwise stated, the following materials are derived from crab or shrimp glycans, but can be special ordered from any of the other sources. Please call for details and pricing.
