CarboMer offers a series of unique, water-soluble, cationic polymers that act as efficient agents in nonviral methods of gene delivery and for tissue scaffolds, e.g., for electrostatically self-assembled polycation/DNA complexes (1). These cationic polymers are able to condense plasmid DNA, yielding polymer/plasmid complexes (polyplexes) that can be taken up by cells, e.g., via endocytosis. Polyplexes protect DNA from nuclease digestion and result in major improvements in the control of charge, size, and the hydrophilic-lipophilic characteristics of the transfecting species, when compared with other non-viral systems. The cationic derivatives also find other uses in elecrophoresis (2), metal chelation, chromatography (3), ion exchange, cosmetics, paper products, pharmaceutical, and other applications.
